Chapter 21
Doobie
“Another beer?”
I looked up from my phone and said, “Sure,” before turning my attention back to the photos before me. I glanced between the three bedroom set options, decided which one I liked, and shot a message back to Alicia letting her know.
“Thanks,” I said, putting my phone down and accepting the glass from Monroe.
We were at the bar. It had been a stressful day at work and we’d needed to blow off steam, so when my partner had asked if I wanted to stop by for a drink, I was one-hundred percent on board.
“I still can’t believe none of the guys in the lineup were our perp,” Monroe said, running his hand over his face.
He looked as tired as I felt.
“I know.”
We’d had a couple of the victims come in to view a lineup of potential muggers, but none of them had been able to identify him, so we were back to square one.
“Ah, well … hopefully we’ll catch a break soon,” Romero said, taking a sip of his whiskey. “How’s your ex holding up?”
“Shaken up, but okay. Still has her job, so that’s good,” I replied. I’d texted with Kevin last night and he’d given me the update.
Just then, one of the young rookies came stumbling over, obviously three sheets to the wind.
“Whoa, buddy,” Monroe said, standing up to help steady the kid.
“Oh, man, you guys gotta see it. The LT is totally bangin’ some chick in the back room,” he said, his words slurring.
“What did you just say?” I asked, grabbing him by the shirt and startling him enough to wipe the stupid grin off his face.
“The LT,” he began, but I pushed him back.
“Shut your mouth,” I warned, then started toward the back of the bar.
“Doobie, what are you doin’, man?” Monroe said from right behind me.
I felt a hand on my arm, but I shook it off, too pissed to be reasoned with.
“If that son of a bitch…” I muttered, too pissed to even finish the sentence.
Visions of the LT and my sister in a compromising position, out where people like that dumbass kid could see them, had me seeing red. And, in that moment I couldn’t care less if Shiloh was my superior or not, I was gonna kill him.
The sounds I heard as I entered the hall fueled my rage and I pushed into the room at the end, ready to kick some ass.
I stepped into the room and stuttered to a stop, confused with what I was seeing.
At first, relief hit me when I noticed the girl who was currently bent over, holding onto the shelves and moaning, had dark hair, not blonde.
Embarrassment had me saying, “Sorry,” as I started to back out, but my eyes focused and I realized the guy doing the fucking was in fact the LT, and my anger came back full force.
“Doobie,” Monroe said urgently from behind me.
“You cheating prick!” I shouted, ignoring my partner.
Shy looked up at me, his expression never changing, and would have
